GB2RS AMATEUR RADIO NEWS BROADCAST
----------------------------------
This information is prepared by the Radio Society of Great
Britain and broadcast each Sunday on the 80, 40, and 2 metre bands
by stations in all parts of the country.
This is the GB2RS news broadcast for the week commencing
Sunday, 31st August.
SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
Data for the period 18th - 21st August is all that is available
due to holidays. The only significant changes currently taking place
are the seasonal ones. The darkness hour F2 critical frequencies are
now declining. The sunspot count was zero on most days, but there
were odd counts of 13 or so. The solar flux averaged 68 units, but
it did not vary by more than one or two units.
The geomagnetic A index was quiet at 6 units on the 18th and up
to an unsettled level of 20 units on the 13th; the average for the
period was 12 units. The cause of the unsettled level was a filament
break-up, and these are the main cause of magnetic disturbances at
the present time. The solar wind particle input was very low. The
INDA index for the period 11th - 17th August was very quiet.
Sporadic E openings on 28MHz were reported on many days and
these seem to have been more numerous than might have been expected.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
----------------------------------
The F2 critical frequencies at Appleton averaged 5.8MHz,
although 6.4MHz was reached on the 20th. The darkness hour lows
averaged 2.4MHz and declined from 2.7MHz on the 18th to 2MHz on the
21st. Sporadic E was reported for at least 2 hours every day,
although there seems to have been no discernable pattern in the
times of the reports. Spread F was not reported during the period.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND & NORTHERN IRELAND)
-----------------------------------------------
There was hardly any variation in the F2 critical frequencies
at South Uist and the daytime highs averaged 5.4MHz. The darkness
hour lows declined from 2MHz to 1.7MHz and averaged 1.9MHz. Sporadic
E was reported at odd hours on the 19th and 21st. Severe absorption
was reported during the early hours of the 21st, together with
spread F; this lasted during most hours of darkness during the
period.
SOLAR FORECAST
--------------
The only spotted region on the sun at present will rotate away
over the west limb this week, so solar activity is expected to be
very low. Geomagnetic activity is expected to remain around quiet
levels all the week. The F2 critical frequencies for the south are
expected to be around 6.3MHz, implying MUFs of around 19MHz - the
corresponding figures for the north are 5.4MHz and 16.5MHz.
The darkness hour critical frequencies are now being affected
by seasonal changes, which are causing a general decline. The levels
are expected to be around 2.3MHz in the south and 1.9MHz in the
north. The declining geomagnetic activity could well reduce noise
levels on the HF bands.
The annual Lincoln Hamfest - run by the Lincoln Short Wave Club
- takes place next Sunday, 7th September at the Lincolnshire
Showground.
This year's event opens at 10.30am and features over 70 trade
and special interest stands including AMSAT-UK, BARTG, RAOTA and the
grand bring-and-buy stall. The RSGB will be in attendance providing
a bookstall and the usual membership services and RAFARS will be
running a demonstration station and rig check facility.
There is plenty to interest the whole family with
demonstrations of model aircraft and cars, childrens videos, Punch
and Judy and a judo demonstration for the more energetic.
Refreshments will be provided by new caterers this year and there
will be a real ale bar.
Chris Jones G6AJL of BBC Radio Lincolnshire - who incidentally
was the first BBC local radio presenter to be a licenced radio
amateur - will be presenting his "Sunday Search" programme live from
the Hamfest between 11am and 1pm.
The Lincolnshire Showground is situated on the main A15 about 4
miles north of the city and is easily reached from all main routes
via the new outer ring road. Talk-in will be provided on S22 by the
West Lincolnshire RAYNET group and there is ample car parking space.
